Mimetic Critics vs Intertextual Critics

Exam 2

Part A Q. 2
While reading through the intertextual characteristics, I quickly put my old professor's face to this school of criticism. Who would have thought my professor was going somewhere during all his rants of "the greats" and "predecessors." While in my creative writing class, we were made to read a book by one of the authors in "The List of Literature's Greatest" he had given us and then write a ten page essay of everything we could steal from these great authors. For example, he gave us certain books from the Holy Bible (Ecclesiastes & Proverbs) and what we could "borrow" from those books is the application of wisdom. In other words, we could assume that some writers from the Victorian Era who made, although not literary, best selling "How to" books for upper class women who couldn't raise their children, cook etc. borrowed this application of wisdom from these books of the Holy Bible.
In this intertextual application essay entitled ""Silence and Slow Time": Pastoral Topoi in Keats's Odes" by Lore Metzger, the writer is stubborn about his argument. Metzger, writes that in Keats's "Ode on a Grecian Urn," Keats takes some literary elements from great writers of the Romantic Era but adds another element to contribute to literature. "Keats insisted on his right to enlarge the neoclassic canon of "great masters," to test a wide spectrum of masterpieces and to allow the masterpieces to test him. When he turned to experimenting with the Pindaric ode, he evolved both his own stanzaic form and hi own repertoire of topoi by testing literary models, imprinting on them his own design." (307)
Metzger says that Keats informs us that he believes Keats incorporated both a classical literary tradition by molding pastoral topoi elements into his poem. (natural life and mother earth) However, Keats didn't stop there, he added some literary traditions of the romantics. Therefore, Keats made contributed something special to literature: Romantic Classicism. "In some of his odes Keats the classicist deployed pastoral topoi to give allusive resonance to his personal debates, while Keats the romanticist exploited the tensions and dissonances that surfaced in his confrontations with literary tradition."
Lore Metzger then ties writes about the various themes going on in the poem "The contest between art and life, sculpture and poetry, sculpture and poetry, has reached a moment of equipoise. But increasingly the speakers tone becomes plaintive as he meditates on lovers that cannot age, trees that will not shed their leaves, unheard melodies that, like unconsummated love, will never grow stale." That all of these "cold pastoral" themes are better than a real mortal life full of passion and the way of cheating death is the "silent immortality of the urn."
In every argument the intertexual critic, Lore Metzger brings forth in his application essay, he ties in the emotional modes, themes and traditions of other types of literature. His need to categorize a writer into a box is what makes him an intertextual critic. Ranking a writer (student) below their predecessors is important because it humbles the student. Once they acknowledge that they are being influenced by another writer, they have to study it in order for them not to just become an imitation of their predecessor. A fantastic example is Hemingway and Dostoyevsky. Ernest Hemingway's predecessor was Fyodor Dostoyevsky, and there are books about Hemingway's constant self comparison and insecurities of living under Dostoyevsky's big shadow.

Part B Q. 3
Josephine Donovan's essay "Beyond the Net: Feminist Criticism as a Moral Criticism," quickly puts her in the the Mimetic school of criticism. This is because she often complains about the way female characters in literature are flawed depictions of reality and how of minimal importance author's of literature focus on presenting work valuable to female readers. Donovan goes on to say that female characters in literature are there to serve men and to apply some sort of aesthetic beauty. "Women in literature written by men are for the most part seen as Other, as objects, of interest only insofar as they serve or detract from the goals of the male protagonist. Such literature is alien from a female point of view because it denies her essential selfhood." (225) The critic is upset by this because men have been writing literature for so long and they haven't presented a woman character who female readers can relate to. "The primary assumption a critic in the "images of women" school must make is an evaluation of the authenticity of the female characters. Authenticity is another concept borrowed from the Existentialists, in particular Heidegger, who meant by it whether an individual has a self-defined critical consciousness, as opposed to a mass-produced or stereotypical identity." Josephine says that any stereotypical persona in literature lacks reality therefore lacks to produce any psychological revelations of reality. For example, if there is one person who is depicted as one hundred percent evil, it is lacking the reality of a person being diverse and vise-versa any character who is one hundred percent righteous is not reality. Biblically speaking, everyone is flawed and falls short of the glory of God. However, will Jesus Christ be an example of an unrealistic character to a mimetic critic? Or will the temptations of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew bring reality to a literary work? If we were to read a story about Hitler that portrays him as evil and only evil, the work has no literary value because Hitler's love for children is known. Josephine Donovan goes on to say that you often see women in literature be only one hundred percent good or one hundred percent bad: the virgin vs the whore, Mary vs Eve etc. the fact that minor characters present only one sided characteristics (good or bad) is not realistic because the characters that do get to have complex personalities are men. "Female stereotypes symbolize either the spiritual or the material, good or evil. Mary, the mother of Jesus, came through time to exemplify the ultimate in spiritual goodness, and Eve, the partner of Adam, the most sinister of evil physicality." Which is true, females do get the short end of the stick in western literature because of the often red headed character in Genesis. However, Adam was with her. Is a man not supposed to lead his wife? Guide her? The fall is Adam's fault just as much as Eve's. But why is it that Eve is the model for the "sinister" woman in literature? Why do we see that just as a female is about to show some complexity to her personality in Henry James's novella, "Daisy Miller," she ends up getting killed as if a woman has to be virtuous to have to live. This, according to mimetic critics is not correct, not literature and we have to be aware of it to fix the unrealistic reality of literature.

Crossfit Days 1 & 2

After 3 hours of sleep I got dressed and made my way to the gym... or "box." I hopped into it and there was Yari. She gave me a brief run-down of what each workout was and then I got to it.

Long Story short= I didn't get through the warm up. I did half of it and threw up! So glad I didn't have any of my mom's delicious tacos that morning.

As I made my way home I figured to sort out a diet plan... I've been looking into the paleo diet for sometime now. When I got home,  I stretched, showered, ate 2 slices of bacon and a banana then fell into a deep sleep. I got up and grilled myself some chicken with veggies on the side.

My second day of Crossfit seemed a lot more smoother. I was accompanied by other members so it wasn't a me and coach type of thing... I could have done a lot more though so I am a bit disappointed.

FOOD IS MY WEAKNESS THOUGH! I'm so hungry! I went to subway and got the plainest... most dry salad ever! x__x I love my food. I want a slice of pizza, a hot juicy burger from whataburger, some icecream melting off a brownie... my mom's tacos! and that gansito my sister bought me :(

I'm starving.
I'm starving.
I'm starving.

:(

Ugh, ADAN! Discipline!

Ok, mastah.

I'm going to go to sleep. I hope for one of those vivid dreams... I hope I get to eat my food this time... the last few food dreams I've had haven't given me enough time to devour anything fudge or greasy!

...Oh boy... I'M STARVING.

STOP SINGING!

"Para la honra y gloria del Señor," they said.

I was about 16 years old when these ladies came to my church. They were "special guests." They began talking about empowering women after being beat up by their husbands or something and they began to sing...

Growing up I never held in my laughter, whether it was in class, prayer, hospitals or even funerals. [I am stating a historic moment - I am not proud of it; it was really immature and should have been disciplined] I laughed, turned to my mom and saw her investing her soul in the worship along with these ladies.

So I sat on the bench and put my head down to hide my face. I felt guilty about laughing at these ladies praising God.

I was 18 years old when I visited a friend's church. The whole band was one family. The pastor - family of the band. The whole church was led by the family (via kin). When the band came on stage, I noticed that a girl was going to lead, instictively I imagined her to have a soft or high voice but man was I wrong. Her voice was deep and it cracked at the middle of every word. She belted every single word of "Hosanna."

Is it just me or is that sad? Is it pride? Why don't they make the effort to include the church in the worship team?

Personally, I don't think anyone should get the microphone and sing louder than anyone if their voice sounds like a drowning cat. We all have talents, God promised them.

Hope it gives you hail.

Friday morning sun is shinin'... cliche? Absolutely. Whatever. I woke up several times before I decided to get up off my flea infested-blue-La Pulga de Alamo purchased silk sheets.

One was an alarm scheduled once a week labeled "BASKETBALL." I 'dismissed' it with one of my half opened-lagaña glazed eyes. The second was my old phone's alarm; that annoying honking alarm tone on every iPhone. Lastly, my dad said "Adan" 4 times. I answered impatiently, "QUE QUIERES!" "Puedes levantar a tu ama del Doctor? Voy ir a la ca-casa de Dan," he stuttered. "Si!" I was about to enjoy some more time in my itchy sheets but I took a peek at my phone. One text message said "Basketball at 8." Great, I had about five minutes to get ready so I rose from bed and limped into my bathroom.

I rolled on my long socks & then lowered them to about six inches above my ankles. I put on an uncomfortable red knee pad and skipped through every puddle till a hoping distance from my car. As I entered McAllen I saw useless traffic lights, a white car in a WHATABURGER ditch, holes on just about every building on Nolana and 10th, broken trees, muddy leaves on the middle of the street. What happened to the Valley's best city? Every person's face - withered. I was distracted by the apocalyptic scenery but made an effort to keep my eyes on the street. As I turned from 10th into Harvey, I thought to myself, "was there a tornado?" I felt stupid just thinking about the question and thinking about asking it aloud or to someone made me laugh. I drove into Calvary's parking lot. First object I saw was a McAllen P.D.  patrol car, in it was a young woman. I drove quietly into the only parking spot that had no water which was a handicap one. As I got off she drove away. I grabbed my phone, quarters and keys to shove them down the pockets of my shorts. Then again I began to stare at everything: trees cut in half mud on every inch of pavement, drowned birds in puddles, broken windows and vehicles under the gym's shed all with fist size dents all over. I took my phone out of my pocket and read a text for volunteers wanted for 9:30. I assumed no basketball but I understood. I picked up a plastic ball and began pealing it to get into the green alien in the middle when the older fella that always walks in while we play basketball walks up to me and asks if I was waiting to go inside because the doors were open but the lights couldn't be turned on. I told him I was all right - that I was waiting to help clean up. I continued hiking around the church. Looking for birds under branches and pushing them aside. I made my way all around the church and saw the busses Destino used to go to conference in 2011, the windshields were busted. I turned around when a white dog with red eyes came charging at me. He literally jumped into the ditch full of iced water and as soon as he was by my side he shook his head and slobbered all over my shoes. After I took a picture of him to post on the greatest social net.w. site I realized that we had two things in common. It appeared like his back left leg was paralyzed therefore had a limp and was breathing abnormally heavy. (TWINS!) Except for the part where he ran joyfully towards kids.

I sat on the benches for about another half hour until I decided I should have something to eat. I came home, ate two tacos, got my mom's gardening hat and drove back. I met three strangely cool dudes David, David and David.... kidding I think one of them was named Hector. After watching them bump pieces of plywood into one another and laughing (in my head) at the power cords getting constantly tangled on one of their legs, I decided to give them a hand and adjust the cut plywood correctly into the shattered window cubbies. After fixing two, the white dog re-appeared, close behind him was the dog pound. (NO!) One of the Davids said that he'd been there all night (he did look like he was in pain hobbling all over the place). Eleven windows after I made my way back to my car. Next stop, V's house.

So, while gathering everything together and putting it in a green Dodge truck, Stephanie calls me, "Hey are you almost done? Vanessa's house is a mess?" "Umm... well we are about done." "Ok well hold on..." "Hey" "Hello? Where do you live?" (I don't know how to write a blog. I always fall back to prose 101 x____x) V explained her address, greatly [I bet] but I suck at following google maps. Sure enough I got lost...

When I drove into her neighborhood I saw the realistic damage a storm could do. Every single house had something catastrophic happen. Neighbors were out cleaning and V's house probably had one inch of glass intact to the window frame. We first put the front yard leaves into black bags (there was a tiny brown bat... dead). Then we cleaned her backyard/patio. We hooped oranges into a trashcan and dragged everything to the back. We finished at about 4. I drove us over to get raspas and then stopped by Michael and Isaac's house. We raked leaves for about 45 minutes then left to Freebirds? I think that's the name of the restaurant. IT WAS GREEAAAAAAT. Food blog : 4/5 on the steak burrito with sour cream, cilantro lime rice, lime, salsa, pinto beans, lettuce and fresh cilantro.

I got home, showered and jumped on my bed and began to write. While I wrote my sister, Paulina, took a piece of grass off of my face. I suck at showers. I'm thankful for God's daily blessings, mercy and love - it's always there somedays I just notice it and appreciate it more, cause I'm sucky a lot of the times. The only thing that happened around my yard was flooding in my mom's newly planted trees which is good for them. (i think) I'm happy to see encouragement rise through crappy situations. I LOVE THE VALLEY AND ITS WEAK CITIES.

Hail, it gives you hope.

[i haven't edited or re-read anything and i probably will leave it as it is cause i'm tired and trying to stay awake to write my project plan for victorian literature. it'll probably be a novel and a research paper about church services or prostitution in the 20th century]

Sunday Morning

I need to stop feeling sorry for myself. I need to get on my knees and pray. We should not let our failing faithfulness discourage us because God's faithfulness to us will go beyond what the most loyal being, creature and even matter on earth goes. His promises are stronger and truer than the sentence fragments I'm trying to construct on here.

1st Corinthians 6:9
Don’t you know that the unrighteous will not inherit God’s kingdom? Do not be deceived: No sexually immoral people, idolaters, adulterers, or anyone practicing homosexuality,10 no thieves, greedy people, drunkards, verbally abusive people, or swindlers will inherit God’s kingdom. 11 And some of you used to be like this. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

- If the first part of this passage defines you, Jesus is calling you right now to confess your sins and turn away from your lifestyle. If the second part defines you, then repentance should show itself in your life. Jesus is not only Savior HE IS LORD.
Repentance from our former lives and turning to Jesus is not receiving judgment but mercy. Repentance gives life, does not take it.

Real repentance leads to life

2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly grief produces a repentance not to be regretted and leading to salvation, but worldly grief produces death.

- worldly grief, sorry I got caught - Godly grief, I’m sorry I’ve sinned against God
Real repentance removes guilt

Psalm 32:5 Then I acknowledged my sin to You and did not conceal my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and You took away the guilt of my sin. Selah - God knows

Strobe Light

Another let down.
The tempter provides the trigger.
She soon hides behind dark curtains.
Creepy laughs are heard when ashes emerge.
